Title: Holiday Social/Toys For Shots Speaker: Everyone in Attendance!

    Meeting Description:
For several years now, all of the Adobe based user groups have gotten together for a big end of year holiday social. Also for several years, those socials have been held at the Winking Lizard in Independence. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the Winking Lizard this year, so we had to scramble to find a different location... until we got a better idea!
  • This year, we thought we would combine our Christmas party with one that is going to help out local area children. Dan Vega, co manager of the Cleveland CFUG, is the organizer for the 2nd annual Toys for Shots Event. The name toys for shots came from a mix between toys for tots and shots. The reason for this is because if you bring just 1 toy to donate we will give your 2 drink tickets that you can use. We thought we put out a nice little incentive for attendees to bring a toy. I hope you can come out and join us for an event that is going to be a lot of fun on top of contributing to a great cause.
  • We will be doing our semi-annual software giveaway that night as well.
  • Event Details:

Who: Anyone interested in having fun and helping out a good cause.

    Meeting Description:

  • Using a few shortcuts, Brian will install Apache, MySQL, PHP (he ducks as he types this), several helpful apps such as PHPMyAdmin, and then also setup ColdFusion on that environment. He will also show you how to set things up so that you have virtual hosts on your machine, so that your Apache server talks to ColdFusion, and may even show you Subversion and some very quick ways on how to set that up.
  • Time permitting, Brian will also show a preview of his new MVC framework, called LightFront. If we don't get to this, he will feature this in an upcoming meeting.

Title: How To Architect Flex Applications Speaker: Joey Lott

    Meeting Description:
We are very pleased to welcome Joey Lott to present to a combined Cleveland Flex User's Group, Cleveland ColdFusion User Group, and Cleveland Adobe User Group audience.
  • When building Flex applications the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You may know how to work with the pieces of Flex (layout, styling components, data components, etc.) but it's still rather easy to get tangled up and frustrated when trying to stitch the piece together into a coherent application. In this presentation we'll look at strategies you can use to build Flex applications in the best way possible. Rather than presenting one boiler plate solution as the "right way" this presentation looks at the bigger picture and common patterns you can employ..
  • This meeting is at a new location, Brulant, Inc. (recently acquired by Rosetta) in Beachwood, as our normal Lodestone location is unavailable for the date of our presentation.

Title: cf.Objective() Conference Preview Speaker: Raymond Camden, Todd Sharp and Brian Meloche

    Meeting Description:
We are going to talk a little bit about the cf.Objective() conference coming up in May. If you are not familiar with this conference the details are below. We are lucky enough to have Raymond Camden, Brian Meloche & Todd Sharp presenting to us at the meeting. All of our presenters will be speaking at the conference and this meeting will give you a preview of their presentations. All of the presentations are short previews designed to show you what the cfObjective conference has to offer.

    Topic 1: Introduction to Model-Glue

    Raymond Camden - http://www.coldfusionjedi.com

    • This is an introduction to the Model-Glue framework. Basics will be covered but time will also be spent looking at real world Model-Glue.

Topic 2: Integrating ColdFusion 8 AJAX with Model-Glue Applications

    Todd Sharp - http://www.cfsilence.com

    • This presentation will examine several aspects ColdFusion 8 Ajax capabilities and how they can be leveraged to simplify adding Ajax functionality to your Model-Glue applications. A short introduction to the CF8 Ajax features will show Data tools and UI components and will highlight appropriate uses of these elements. The heart of the presentation will examine best practices for utilizing ColdFusion 8 Ajax functionality within your Model-Glue application. This section will examine when it is appropriate to route Ajax requests through your controller and when you should create and utilize a remote facade. Also included will be a short section demonstrating how to tap into the underlying raw Ajax frameworks on which the CF8 elements are built to extend them to meet your particular application.

Topic 3: ColdFusion as a Different Type of "Glue"

    Brian Meloche - http://www.brianmeloche.com

    • Is ColdFusion really "the glue" that Adobe says it is? We always hear about functions like PDF generation, image manipulation, Outlook integration and all of the new functionality, but is that all that ColdFusion is good for? Is ColdFusion for intranet use only? Can ColdFusion be a different type of glue? This topic will cover using ColdFusion as the front end to an enterprise-level, customer facing application, integrating it with a business object back-end from enterprise-level systems. This will cover what types of things you would need to integrate, levels of integration, ways to integrate, including MQ Series and WebMethods, WSDL vs. REST, direct vs. indirect integration, integrating with external applications, and data replication. Note: Despite the title similarities, this presentation has NOTHING to do with Model-Glue.

If you are unable to attend the meeting in person you will be able to watch our 3 presenters by way of the ColdFusion Meetup. If you would like to join the meeting online, please go to http://experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup/.

Title: Scorpio: Introducing ColdFusion 8!!! Speaker: Ben Forta

    Meeting Description:
It is with great pleasure that the Cleveland ColdFusion Users Group, Cleveland Adobe Users Group and Cleveland RIA User Group announce that Ben Forta, Adobe Systems Inc's Senior Technical Evangelist, will be speaking to us on Scorpio, the codename for ColdFusion 8.
  • Even before the release of the highly successful ColdFusion MX 7 two years ago, the ColdFusion team was already hard at work scheming, experimenting, planning, building, creating ... and the result is "Scorpio", the highly anticipated 8th major ColdFusion edition. Building on top of the powerful platform introduced in ColdFusion MX, and the solid feature set of ColdFusion MX 7, "Scorpio" piles on new features and technologies for developers, administrators, technical decision makers, and more. The official "Scorpio" release is scheduled for mid-2007, but you don't have to wait until then to see it for yourself. Ben Forta will be demoing lots of Scorpio throughout an extended user group tour in the spring, where attendees will get to see "Scorpio" in action, as well as gain access to the pre-release beta, and get the chance to win Adobe software. And since our user group is part of the Scorpio tour, plan on coming out for this special meeting!!
  • The time of this meeting is tentative, and the location is to be announced. Stay tuned... And RSVP NOW!!!

  • Meeting Recap:
It was a WILDLY successful meeting for both the Cleveland CFUG and AUG, on this historic day! We were very honored to have Ben Forta present to us! The meeting started a little late, as Ben's flight was delayed, but we managed to have a very successful meeting, and everyone who attended left the meeting pumped about ColdFusion 8!

May marked the 3rd anniversary of the Cleveland AUG, and we blew away our attendance record! 51 people attended this great meeting! Thanks to Lodestone for the facility, food and drink, and to Ben from making time during his busy Scorpio launch tour to come to Cleveland to see us!

Title: DataMgr Component Set Speaker: Steve Bryant

    Meeting Description:
Steve Bryant demonstrates his free DataMgr component set. This is a tool to help with common database interactions. It reduces the amount of redundant work needed to accomplish basic tasks and helps bring about a more efficient workflow by separating database interactions from programming logic.

  • Unlike ORM solutions, it does not enforce a certain programming approach but rather allows you to program in whatever style you prefer (OO or not). It currently supports Access, MySQL, PostGreSQL and SQL Server. Adding more database support should be easy.

Title: ColdFusion 101 Speaker: Brian Meloche

    Meeting Description:
By popular demand, we're doing a "ColdFusion 101" topic. Anyone who is interested in doing dynamic web sites for the first time, or has used other languages and would like to give the ease of ColdFusion a try, this topic will be for you. Brian will present it in a "cookbook" style, in a very how-to presentation and it will be totally interactive - what you want to see is what you will see.

We'll also have some more advanced tips during the meeting.

We've also moved the meeting to a new night - Tuesday nights, and at a new location - Tri-C West.

This meeting is a combined meeting with the Cleveland Adobe Users Group.

    Meeting Recap:
Brian Meloche built a small but database driven website in less than two hours using ColdFusion. This website had a login/logout, had roles, showed code reuse and allowed you to see different things according to whether or not you were logged in or not and what role you had if you were logged in. The audience were generally impressed with what you could build in a short time with ColdFusion.

This meeting was a joint meeting with the Cleveland Adobe Users Group.

Title: Getting Started with Flex Speaker: Mick Keily

    Meeting Description:

Flex is a major part of Adobe's future and rightfully so.ニ Besides offering the tools to create web-based applications that look and perform great, it runs on both J2EE and .NET infrastructures.ニ If you have not yet visited labs.adobe.com, you really should take advantage of the free Flex beta program while it is still available and download the components of Flex.ニ It is very straight forward and will not take long to download.

Our meeting this month will essentially be a nuts and bolts introduction to getting started with Flex, starting with the installation process on a Windows XP computer.ニ The components of Flex include

  • Flex Builder 2.0
  • Flex Data Services 2.0 (formerly Flex Enterprise Services 2.0)
  • ColdFusion/Flex Connectivity
  • Flash Player 9 (formerly Flash Player 8.5)
  • Flex SDK 2.0
  • Flex Charting 2.0
  • We will actually go through the installation process of these components and, depending on the time, discuss the process of getting started with Flex.

Don't forget to login and RSVP if you are planning to attend.ニ The meeting starts at 6:30pm.ニ We will also have some Adobe promotional items to give away.

    Meeting Recap:
Get started using Flex. Let us give you a nudge to get the process rolling. We will go through the install of the Flex components and discuss the basic layout.

Title: Introduction to ColdFusion Frameworks Speaker: Brian Meloche

    Meeting Description:

Brian will be talking about frameworks, which are ways to structure your applications. Specifically, he'll be talking about ColdFusion frameworks. Since this is an intro to the subject, he'll start with a couple of the simpler frameworks - one that isn't that well known (TheHub, which this website is based upon) and Fusebox (in our case, version 3). He'll also cover Fusebox 4.1 (the latest version, which has a steeper learning curve), Mach-II, Model Glue and other frameworks.

NOTE: This meeting was originally scheduled for January 11th, but had to be postponed, due to a personal scheduling conflict.

    Meeting Recap:
Brian Meloche presented an intro to frameworks. The presentation went a little long, and we were only able to cover TheHUB, Fusebox 3 and Fusebox 4.1. We'll cover the other frameworks in follow-up presentations.

Title: SeeFusion and BlueDragon Speaker: Charlie Arehart

    Meeting Description:
Charlie Arehart will be speaking on two topics:

    1. Introducing SeeFusion: CFML application monitoring for ColdFusion and BlueDragon - Frequent CFUG speaker Charlie Arehart will set aside his BlueDragon hat for a discussion of a tool that will be of interest to users of both ColdFusion and BlueDragon. SeeFusion is a powerful tool for monitoring CFML web applications and database traffic coming out of either ColdFusion or BlueDragon. It offers a free development edition that may satisfy your needs, and the commercial edition is very inexpensive.

    2. BlueDragon/.NET: Native Integration of CFML and .NET - Do you know how Macromedia proposes to integrate ColdFusion MX with .NET? Via web services. But what if you need more? lots more! Would you like to be able to share session, application, and other variables between CFML and ASP.NET? Would you like to be able to include the output of CFML pages in ASP.NET, and vice-versa? How about calling .NET objects from CFML--without web services?! How about calling a CFC from ASP.NET, again without web services?

There are even benefits without changing your CFML code at all. .NET is simply a better platform for CFML than J2EE. In this hour, Charlie will show ample examples and explain the many benefits of integrating CFML and .NET.

He'll also introduce the other Java editions of BlueDragon, including the Server and Server JX editions for deploying CFML on Windows, Linux or OS X, and the J2EE edition for deploying CFML on any J2EE server, far more easily than with CFMX. Along the way, he'll also answer the common questions and misconceptions about BlueDragon.

We will be giving away a copy of BlueDragon Server JX, an $899 value!

    Meeting Recap:

As usual, Charlie did two fantastic presentations to a very interested audience.

Charlie Arehart's presentations on SeeFusion by WebApper and BlueDragon/BD.NET are now available. Download the SeeFusion presentation here and the BlueDragon/BD.NET presentation here. Mick and Brian would like to thank Charlie for taking the time and the expense to come up from Atlanta to present to us!!!
